Battery modeling under crush conditions. Development of a homogenized model including the rupture in RADIOSS based on the research done by Elham Sahraei at MIT

概要
In term of safety the major concern for the Electric Vehicles regards the behavior of the batteries under crush and crash conditions. The way the internal cells will perform from no reaction to electric ones with combustion and sometime the complete burning of the vehicle depends mainly from the crushing of the different components and their interactions. . Two approaches could be considered in term of virtual analysis using FEA. The first one is to model the batteries in details to obtain a fine representation of the deformation and rupture of all the different components. Such simulations and analysis will highlight the zones in which electric reactions could happened. To be predictive this kind of models need a fine model with a lot of elements (3 to 5 million of elements for a complete battery pack). By the way it means also significant CPU time. On the other hand Elham Sahraei developed at MIT a homogenized approach at the battery cell level which allows, based on the deformation and rupture of the cells, to predict the crush behavior of the batteries with a simplified fea model. The electric short circuit will be predict based on the global deformation of the cells. This specific approach has been implemented in RADIOSS the HyperWorks crash solver.
