Bull Selects Altair Engineering’s PBS Professional On-Demand Computing Software Environment for Its High-Performance Computing Systems

PBS Professional Provides a Solution That Overcomes the Challenges of Multi-Core Technology TROY, Mich., (June 20, 2007) – Altair Engineering, a leading global provider of technology and services that empower client innovation and decision-making, today announced that it has integrated PBS Professional with Bull’s NovaScale high-performance computing (HPC) systems to provide customers with a pure on-demand computing software environment. This collaboration provides a robust and flexible solution that overcomes the challenges associated with licensing software over multi-core technology and allows customers to only pay for the software licenses they use.

“By integrating Altair’s PBS Professional, Bull is delivering to customers what they have been asking for – a computing environment that allows them to receive the greatest return on their computing investment,” said Benoit Hallez, HPC business unit director at Bull. “This partnership is a good technical answer to our customer needs. PBS Professional strongly fits with our Bull Advanced Server (BAS) managing tools in terms of integration with Bull MPI, CPUSet and resources manager. In addition, the innovative software licensing model allows Bull to deliver more capability and value to our customers.”

PBS Professional is an on-demand computing software environment that provides features such as workload management and job scheduling, which are essential in powering grids, clusters and on-demand computing environments. The software maximizes the utilization of computing resources by intelligently scheduling and managing computational workloads. By increasing the efficiency of the hardware and software resources, PBS Professional reduces total cost of ownership and provides true business value to cluster and grid computing customers in a variety of industries.

“PBS is the most widely implemented software for grid-, cluster- and on-demand computing worldwide,” said Michael Humphrey, vice president of Altair’s PBS GridWorks. “Our continued focus with PBS Professional is in providing a highly scalable, available and resilient solution in HPC, which makes Bull a natural partner for us. We are excited Bull shares our vision that PBS Professional will be the key enabling technology for the future of on-demand computing and grid technologies.”
