Tokyo Designers Week 2014

アジア最大級のデザイン見本市「Tokyo Designers Week 2014」で、東京理科大学の学生を中心としたデジタルものづくり団体「Digital Studio」が、複雑な形状の岩の上で鋼管が支え合うデザインのパビリオン「五軸庵」を展示しました。構造的立証には「solidThinking Inspire」が使用されており、岩の上での鋼管のバランスなどは一見不安定に見えますが、Inspireの解析結果に基づく形状は完全に安定していました。

Tokyo Designers Week 2013

東京デザイナーズウィーク2013に出展するパビリオンの設計にsolidThinking Inspireを使用し、意想外なデザインと安定した構造を実現した。このプロジェクトはコロンビア大学STUIO-XとDIGITAL STUDIOが共同で行った。出展作品は、無駄がないプリミティブで知的な形態と、Inspireによって得られた構造的な安定感と不安定なデザイン性の両立が評価され、学校作品展セミグランプリおよび企業賞3点を受賞し、各方面から非常に高い評価を得た。

Tokyo Designers Week 2012に参加するTUS DIGITAL STUDIOを、アルテアのsolidThinkingチームがサポートしました。

Internal design

 For the design we use softkilloption which optimize an volume structure by cutting a precise percentage of it, which has less impact on the structure according to the forces you apply.

Structural optimization using Inspired 8.5

 We use the internal design of the pavilion and structurally optimize it using following fixed parameters : support surface placed on the bottom of each columns, the own weight of the structure, wind load from 24 different directions, and the elasticity and density of the material used (PPL) and one unfixed parameter : the percentage of design space. By changing this parameter we manage to use Inspired 8.5 not only as a structural optimization tool but also as a parametrical design tool. Shown below are the details of the parameters.

・Weight, Wind load

Inspired 8.5 calculates automatically the weight of each part of the structure according to the material parameter (the density and elasticity of the PPL). We used this function in the optimization process. The wind load is applied from 24 different directions as we run the optimization process for each direction separately and combine the results in SolidThinking 8.5 and create the final optimized design proposal.

・Limits of the construction method

The Fabrication method is shiplaps. We add a small cuts into a plate like object and engage the plates together. Its easy to make organic like shapes by this method. Inspired 8.5 optimizes the structure as a volume which have to be fill with homogeneous material. But in the shiplaps it is a little bit different. So here we use a 9mm plates as the thickness of our material and test the limitations of the construction method. The result is like in the pictures below when the shiplaps are less then two for one plate that part of the structure become specially week.

Unfixed parameter
・The percentage of design space

We perceive that the design is consisted of two main parts, 4 columns and one roof and we start the optimization process from the roof. When we optimize the internal form of the roof using Inspired 8.5 various of organic shape gaps begin to appear in the roof. It starts to look like a cloud in the sky and warm light enters the gaps and fill the interior. So by changing the percentage of design space we study the variations of the gaps and find the best design for them. First we start from 5 percent to 20 percent by studying in 5 percent intervals(5, 10, 15, and 20percent)..
In the result of the 5 percent design space the gaps appear too big hard to fabricate and there will be too much light coming from them.. Despite of this when 20 percent the gaps are too small. So we focus on 10 to 15 percent result and run a new study in 1 percent intervals. Finally we decided that the percentage of design space which perfectly mach our need is 10 percent.

The feedback we get by using Inspired 8.5 and SolidThinking

 Inspired 8.5 is very easy to use. You can easily apply a material or any king of force just by clicking on very simple icons. But the conditions you can set for a material or a force or others are very fine, giving you very precise optimized result. Also it is good that it calculates automatically the weight of the structure based on the material characteristics. You can easily use it even you are not a professional in the field of engineering. And also one of the greatest advantages about this tool is that it uses extensive research on the human bone structure and one can very easily apply the complex mechanism of the human bones to generate organic forms which are not just beautiful but structurally analyzed.
